What to Expect When You Hire a Live Illustrator for Your Toronto Event

There's a moment that happens at almost every event I draw at.

A guest walks past my table, slows down, watches me draw for a minute — and then asks, 'wait, are you drawing people live?'

That moment of surprise is part of what makes live illustration such a memorable entertainment. Most people have never experienced it before. And by the end of the event, there's usually a queue.

If you're planning a wedding, corporate event, birthday, or milestone celebration in Toronto or the GTA and wondering what live illustration actually involves — this is everything you need to know.

What Is Live Illustration, Exactly?

Live illustration (or live event illustration or live guest illustration) is exactly what it sounds like: an artist drawing your guests in real time, on the spot, while your event is happening around them.

It's not a photo booth! It's not a caricaturist! And it's nothing like having a painting done in advance and displayed at the event.

Live illustration is an interactive experience — guests get photographed, enjoy the event and leave with an original piece of art made specifically for them at the end. That drawing goes home with them. Some frame it. Some use it as their phone wallpaper. Some text it to their parents on the way out the door.

The keepsake is real. The experience is personal. And the reaction — every single time — is something.

How It Works?

Setup

I arrive at your venue 15-30 minutes before guests do. My setup is compact — one table, printer, iPad or watercolors, papers, other supplies and good lighting. You don't need to dedicate a large space or rearrange your layout.

During the Event

Once guests start arriving, the experience runs itself. The first few guests break the ice, and from there, a natural lineup starts. I draw at a pace of approximately 10–12 guests per hour depending on the chosen style — traditional watercolour illustrations or digital illustrations. Each drawing is a complete, original portrait.

What Guests Receive

For traditional (paper) illustration: guests take home their original hand-drawn illustrations.

For digital illustration: I draw on iPad and print on the spot — guests leave with a printed portrait in a white frame and protective sleeve.

Digital files are also be emailed to them afterwards.

Both options are available. Many clients choose digital illustration because of the printing flexibility and the ability to share the artwork easily after the event.

What Types of Events Work Best?

The short answer: almost all of them. I've drawn at:

•         Weddings (cocktail hour, reception, or both)

•         Corporate events, galas, and conferences

•         Brand activations and product launches

•         South Asian celebrations

•         Cultural celebrations

•         Milestone birthdays — 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th

•         Baby showers and bridal showers

•         Holiday parties, summer parties and end-of-year corporate events

The events I love most are the ones with people dressed beautifully for something that matters to them. The more meaningful the occasion, the more the drawings feel like they mean something.

How Many Guests Can I Draw in One Night?

Based on an average event of 3–4 hours, I typically draw between 30 and 50 guests. For shorter events or cocktail hours, I'll focus on drawing as many guests as possible in the time available.

Not every guest will want to be drawn — and that's completely fine. What I find is that once a few guests get their portraits, others who were initially shy usually end up wanting one before the event ends.

What I Need from the Host?

Very little. A table, a chair, and access to a power outlet (for digital illustration). Good lighting helps — either natural light or standard event lighting is fine. I'll handle everything else.

It helps to let me know in advance: the rough guest count, the type of event, the approximate timeline, and whether you'd prefer traditional or digital illustration. From there, I can give you a tailored quote.

How Much Does Live Illustration Cost in Toronto?

Pricing depends on the length of the event and the number of guests.

Most event bookings start at a minimum of two hours. As a general guide, expect a range that reflects the level of craft, prep time, and the experience you're creating for your guests — it's a premium entertainment option, and it's priced to reflect that.

I'm always happy to work within a budget where possible — get in touch and we can talk through and tailor something for your event specifically.

When Should I Book?

As early as you can. Toronto weekends in spring and summer fill up quickly — If you're planning a 2026 wedding or corporate event, now is the right time to enquire.

A 50% deposit secures your date. The balance is due on the date of the event.

I'm Based in Toronto — But I'm Not Limited to Toronto

I serve clients across the GTA — Mississauga, Brampton, Markham, Vaughan, Oakville, Burlington, and beyond. I'm also available to travel for destination events. Travel fees apply outside the GTA.
